AI crypto token categories group projects by what their networks actually do — from renting out GPU compute to running autonomous agents to supplying data for model training. Sorting tokens this way matters because comparing a data network to an agent platform is like comparing an oil pipeline to a delivery app. They are not the same business.

Below are nine practical categories of AI crypto tokens, what each one does, and the single question to ask before trusting any project inside it.

Why Categories Matter

The "AI token" label covers radically different designs. Without categories, investors end up ranking tokens on price action alone. With them, you can ask the right question for each type: does this network do the thing its category requires? 1. Compute

Networks that rent out distributed GPU and CPU power for AI workloads. The token pays providers and is spent by buyers. Key test: does it route real AI workloads, or just advertise capacity?

2. Agents

Tokens behind autonomous software agents that act on a user's behalf — trading, researching, posting, or transacting. Key test: does the agent use real machine-learning inference, or is it scripted if-then logic dressed up as AI?

3. DeFAI

The intersection of AI and decentralized finance — protocols where AI drives strategies, risk management, or execution. Key test: is the AI load-bearing, or a thin feature bolted onto an ordinary DeFi app?

4. Data

Networks that source, label, or distribute data intended for AI training. Key test: is the data genuinely usable for models, with real demand on the buy side?

5. Frameworks

Toolkits and platforms developers use to build AI agents or applications. Key test: measure downstream adoption — how many real projects are built on it?

6. Infrastructure

Indexing, storage, oracles, and identity layers that AI workloads rely on. Key test: are AI systems actively using it, or is the "AI" framing aspirational?

7. Bittensor Subnets

Specialized networks within the Bittensor ecosystem, each producing a particular kind of machine intelligence and represented by its own alpha token. Key test: does the subnet produce verifiable, useful intelligence? (We cover the mechanics in our Bittensor explainer.)

8. Virtuals Ecosystem

Agent tokens launched within agent-creation platforms, often on Base or Solana, with shared fee structures. Key test: does the agent generate real activity and revenue, or just attention?

9. Meme / Narrative

Tokens carrying an AI theme but driven primarily by hype and culture rather than utility. Key test: be honest that the value here is narrative, not function — and size risk accordingly.

How to Use These Categories

Once you know a token's category, you can stop asking generic questions ("is this a good project?") and start asking specific, falsifiable ones ("does this compute network actually move workloads?"). That is the difference between investing on a story and investing on evidence.

A category alone does not tell you a token is good — a weak compute network is still weak. But it tells you which evidence to look for. From there, a structured score across utility, team, code, token model, and narrative gives you a comparable read across the whole sector.
